Positive Parenting Workshops 2022-23 academic year

19 Oct 2022

Our Positive Parenting workshops, facilitated by a range of our teaching and leadership team members, have been extremely popular since the first session in September 2020 and have become one of the meaningful communication tools for families. These workshops aim to support each parent to utilise their strength and be secure and confident in their parenting styles, which helps us to build a learning community that we aspire to achieve continuously.

In this article, we will introduce the carefully designed topics and their contents for this year's Positive Parenting workshops. You may also refer to the poster at the end of this article for more information about the presenters and dates.

Workshop 1 Our curriculum and systematic assessment that facilitates children's learning and development.

In this session, Ms Sophie Brookes, Head of Early Years, and Ms Erica Yang, Deputy Head of Early Years, demonstrated how our curriculum underpins everyday teaching and learning and how systematic tools such as assessment windows, Leuven scales, moderation and reporting, interventions are utilised to facilitate the learning and development, to lay the foundation to the future pathways.

Workshop 2 Literacy through the lenses of the environment

We are looking at how to use literacy as one of the 'Child hundred languages' and how we embed literacy in play.

The child has a hundred languages, a hundred hands, a hundred thoughts, a hundred ways of thinking, of playing, of speaking, always a hundred ways of listening, of marvelling, of loving, a hundred joys for singing and understanding, a hundred worlds to discover, a hundred worlds to invent, a hundred worlds to dream. The child has a hundred languages.

Workshop 3 Pathways Coffee Morning with Ms Kathryn Richardson

The Master will be presenting on the pathways available for your children after Huili Nursery Hangzhou. Children with a foreign passport can join our Wellington College International Hangzhou whilst our host country families can take the Huili School Hangzhou pathway into G1. There will also be time for Q&As.

Workshop 4   Play is the highest form of research - Albert Einstein

What do I learn when I play with water/sand/blocks/paint/home corner resources?

Play allows children to learn willingly without any pressure, explore their surroundings, experiment with resources and retain information from their experiences. For example, children learn fundamental physics when playing with water and sand; they experiment with speed and velocity while driving cars down the ramps; practising mathematical concepts while building with blocks; they make sense of societal norms and behaviours while playing in the home corner.

Workshop 5 From a parent's perspective - How does a home-school connection support a child's learning?

In this session, a parent from Huili Nursery will share how her engagement with the child's school life inspired the teaching and learning opportunities in both school and home. This home-school connection also inspired the teaching team to plan continuous learning opportunities for the children.

Workshop 6 Visual Learning Tools for home learning

In this workshop, parents will be introduced to some visual tools to support children's understanding of abstract concepts, for example, time, emotions, and space. These tools could also provide learning opportunities for shaping good habits and meeting higher learning milestones.

Workshop 7 Recommended activities for parents to build the home-school connection

In this presentation, parents will understand how and what children learn at Huili Nursery. In addition, various home activities will be shared, such as Read-aloud at home, How to use WLD to interact with your child and What types of questions you can ask to promote deeper thinking. Finally, specific recommendations and guidance will be provided to parents to build a strong home-school connection.

Workshop 8 The 3rd teacher - environments

How can a carefully curated environment foster curiosity and lead to learning? Outside the classroom at Huili Nursery are the meadow, flowers, tyres, trolleys, and more innovative facilities, such as a mud kitchen, a water-play area and a flower shop, for explorations and fun. The campus decorations are easy on the eyes with an elegant style, and reading corners are around every corner. It is great to raise a reading habit from a very young age.

Workshop 9 Equal dialogue

At Huili Nursery Hangzhou, we believe young children are capable learners. When the children and the adult are in the same role, any problem will unfold in a safe atmosphere, even if they have different perspectives. Children also have the same opportunities as adults to experience conflict, challenge and accept their own errors and the differences in the world around them. As a result, adults and children better understand themselves and others, and their relationships change.

Family and school are undoubtedly imperative to the growth of a child. However, it is worth noting that a child's development is facilitated when parents and school share information in a cooperative and complementary mode, whether from the perspective of how a child's individual growth is impacted by the environment or by education uniformity. We hope that with our Positive Parting Workshops, parents can make joint efforts with us to best support our children's learning journey and development.
